Baby Notebook App and Responsive Website

Project Overview
The product:
Baby Notebook is a tool that helps busy caregivers simply keep tracks of and manage the data of baby’s daily activities, facilitating a healthier way for baby caring. Baby Notebook’s primary target users include parents, grandparents, nannies and other caregivers who would like to easily keep notes of baby’s daily habits and data patterns in a clear and well-structured way.
Project duration:
July 2021 to August 2021
Goal:
Design an app that will improve quality on the goal of baby caring, and help caregivers well track and manage the schedule for the baby’s daily needs conveniently and accurately.
My role:
UX designer leading the app and responsive website design from conception to delivery.
Responsibilities:
Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, iterating on designs, determining information architecture, and responsive design.
UNDERSTANDING THE USER

User Research Summary
Most interview participants reported feeling necessary about keeping track of baby’s important daily activities, but they think using traditional methods such as keeping notes on paper or with documents on computer are time and energy consuming. The feedback received through research made it very clear that users would be willing to keep good tracks of baby caring activities if they had access to an easy-to-use tool to help them.
Persona 1: Alexandra
Problem statement:
Alexandra is a new parent who needs a quick one-hand tap tool to keep track of their baby’s daily activities because they want to save energy and make parenting easier.

Persona 2: Cynthia
Problem statement:
Cynthia is a babysitter who needs an easy-to-use baby caring tool because she wants to provide high-quality baby caring work and syncing with the baby’s parents efficiently.

Competitive Audit
An audit of a few competitor’s products provided direction on gaps and opportunities to address with the Baby Notebook app.

Ideation
I did a quick ideation exercise to come up with ideas for how to address gaps identified in the competitive audit. My focus was specifically on baby activities tracking and simple note taking features.
STARTING THE DESIGN

Digital wireframes
After ideating and drafting some paper wireframes, I created the initial designs for the Baby Notebook app. These designs focused on delivering clear guidance for users to keep track and set up reminders for their baby’s daily activities.
Low-fidelity Prototype
To prepare for usability testing, I created a low-fidelity prototype that connected the user flow of making notes and keeping track of baby’s activities.

Usability Study Findings
These were the main findings uncovered by the usability study:

CUSTOMIZED ACTIVITIES
Users need clearer cues for where and how they can create more sections for customized baby activity records when necessary.

EXTRA NOTE
Users need a feature that allows extra note input.
REFINING THE DESIGN

Mockups

Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design changes like providing a clear section from the home screen to add more customized baby activities.

Additional design changes included adding an option to add extra personalized note to the activity record page.
High-fidelity Prototype
The high-fidelity prototype followed the same user flow as the low-fidelity prototype, including design changes made after the usability study.

Accessibility Considerations
Clear labels for interactive elements that can be read by screen readers.
Initial focus of the home screen on clear flows and personalized sections help define the primary task or action for the user.

RESPONSIVE DESIGN
Information Architecture
With the app designs completed, I started work on designing the responsive website. I used the Baby Notebook sitemap to guide the organizational structure of each screen’s design to ensure a cohesive and consistent experience across devices.

Responsive Designs
The designs for screen size variation included mobile, tablet, and desktop. I optimized the designs to fit specific user needs of each device and screen size.

GOING FORWARD

Takeaways
Impact
Users shared that the app made taking care of baby’s daily activities becoming something they could easily keep good track of. One quote from peer feedback was that “the Baby Notebook app helps bring caring about the baby to a healthy and well-organized level in a way that’s easy and efficient.”
What I learned
I learned that diligently going through each step of the design process and aligning with specific user needs helped me come up with solutions that were both feasible and useful.
Next Steps

Conduct research on how successful the app is in reaching the goal to make parenting an easier and enjoyable experience.
